Phase 1: Recount
RECOUNT PURPOSE:
A recount provides information about what happened, when it happened, where it happened and who was involved.
STRUCTURE:
The three parts of a recount are:·
- An orientation which provides details of who/what/when/where.
- A sequence of events (paragraphs) to retell what has happened
- A reorientation concludes the retelling of the events

Instructions:
1. Open up the document titled "recount_student_copy"
2. Read the recount on the Solar Eclipse
Discussion: What is the purpose of the text?
Discussion: Who is the intended audience of the text?
4. Highlight all of the orientation section in red.
5. Under the column heading "Text Features"- write ORIENTATION capitalised, in bold and size 16 font.
Discussion: What is the purpose of an orientation?
6. Underneath this heading, write your own definition of ORIENTATION.
7. Highlight all of the sequence of events (paragraphs) in blue.
8. Under the column heading "Text Features"- write SEQUENCE OF EVENTS capitalised, in bold and size 16 font.
Discussion: What do we do when we sequence?
Underneath this, write your own definition of a SEQUENCE OF EVENTS.
9. Underline the topic sentences in each of the description paragraphs.
Discussion: What is a topic sentence? What term have we already used that serves a similar role to a topic sentence?
Can you identify the PEEL in each paragraph? Why do you think the PEEL structure works so well in structuring the paragraph?
10. Highlight all of the conclusion/ reorientation section in orange.
11. Under the column heading "Text Features" write CONCLUSION/ REORIENTATION capitalised, in bold and size 16 font.
Discussion: What do we do when we conclude? Why do we do it?
12.Underneath this heading, write your own definition of a conclusion.

b. Descriptive words- yellow
c. Use of past tense- green
d. Use of quoted speech- blue
