Phase 3: Exposition
EXPOSITION PURPOSE:
An exposition attempts to persuade the reader to believe something by presenting one side of the argument.
STRUCTURE:
The three parts of a recount are:
- An introductory statement (introduction) that presents the writers point of view and previews the arguments to be presented.
- A series of arguments that aim to persuade the reader – new paragraph for each new argument. A topic sentence introduces the new argument.
- A conclusion sums up arguments and reinforces writer’s point of view.

PART 2
Instructions:
1. Open up the document titled "exposition_student_copy"
2. Read the exposition titled Dear Parents
Discussion: What is the purpose of the text?
Discussion: Who is the intended audience of the text?
4. Highlight all of the introduction section in red.
5. Under the column heading "Text Features"- write INTRODUCTION capitalised, in bold and size 16 font.
Discussion: What do we do when we introduce?
6. Underneath this heading, write your own definition of INTRODUCTION.
7. Highlight all of the Argument (paragraphs) in blue.
8. Under the column heading "Text Features"- write "ARGUMENTS" capitalised, in bold and size 16 font.
Discussion: What do we do when we ARGUE?
Underneath this, write your own definition of an ARGUMENT.
9. Underline the topic sentences in each of the description paragraphs.
Discussion: What is a topic sentence? What term have we already used that serves a similar role to a topic sentence?
Can you identify the PEEL in each paragraph? Why do you think the PEEL structure works so well in structuring the paragraph?
10. Highlight all of the conclusion section in orange.
11. Under the column heading "Text Features" write CONCLUSION capitalised, in bold and size 16 font.
Discussion: What do we do when we conclude? What is the purpose of a conclusion in an exposition (argument)?
12.Underneath this heading, write your own definition of a conclusion.
Extension:
1. Identify and highlight all of the language features on your document:
a. Modality- purple
b. Thinking verbs (e.g.: I feel)- green
c. Technical terms- blue
d. Use of reported speech-orange
e. Use of conjunctions and connectives- red
f. Use of cause and effect words (Explain and Evidence (PEEL))- brown

As a class we are going to use the Exposition "Dear Parents" to do a joint re write. Choose one of the following topics to do your recount:
1. Mobile phones should/ should not be banned from schools
2. Exercise is good for us.
Instructions:
1. Download the document "exposition_re_write_student"
2. Start with the introduction then proceed to the argument paragraphs and finish with the conclusion section.
4. Save your work onto your USB.

- What is the purpose?
- Is it written in third person?
